The message that this show sent out to kids was a very bad one. The constant putting down of "nerds". the reinforcement of the good looking kids running the school. The teenage hottie, Kelli wearing what amounted almost nothing.
How about how the teachers and principal were portrayed? One was a clown, all the teachers were either deaf, blind, or oblivious to these 5 kids running the school.

Zack is the mimbo at Bayside. He first dates Kelly, has possible feelings for Jessie, tries to run his game on Slater's sister, goes after Lisa and then Tori.
I'm surprised he didn't go after Kelly's little sister, Jaime!

I can't believe they made a 'new class'. Is anyone even brave enough to admit they watched that crappy remake? The only clip I ever saw of it was Zack, Lisa and Slater showing up to save Bayside, and their appearances were the only thing getting the audience hyped.
Let's face it, the show well and truly ended when Zack and Kelly got married. That's the perfect ending because the show was pretty much centred on their relationship even when they weren't together. Anything beyond that, without the original cast, is jumping the shark.

How is this even up for discussion? The fact that virtually nobody even talks about "The New Class" on a board about when shows go to hell says it all. Most people didn't even see the New Class it was so horrible. That's the obvious shark-jumping moment. Can anyone even name any of the pathetic Zach-clones they tried? Wasn't one named Skunk or Rat or something? From what little I could stomach of the New Class, it was basically a constantly rotating cast of pretty, no-talent, uninteresting robots trying to rehash old episodes. The fact that Screech was still on the show years after all the other kids graduated as some sort of Mr. Belding ball-washer was the saddest thing I've ever seen on broadcast television.
It's a stupid show. The main message of Saved By The Bell is "If you are not pretty enough, you are nothing". They used way too many stereotypes. I don't think teenagers should watch it, unless you are the most popular girl in school.
I loved the show, i watched it every saturday on NBC and then when it went to TBS i watched it everyday. i had a huge crush on mark paul gosselaar, i had to buy his doll when they came out. As for lark voorhies and mark paul dating, i heard they dated from 1989-1992. the site i saw that on (i think it was imdb.com) didn't mention him dating the other girls just her, but ya never know.
I admit watching this show when I was younger, a pity I didn't listen to my mom when she warned me about watching that (in her own words)"pointless dribble" had no idea what she was talking about but since seeing the re-runs I do now.
Here are a few cents worth of my thoughts on this show.
1. The Earthquake with the principle's wife, Zack, and Tori was not a bad summary. But living in California they should have known automaically that you should never use a elevator during a earthquake.
But I will let it slip by seeing how they were in there way before the earthquake occured and earthquakes are hard to predict.
2. The whole same classes thing was a bit much even for a fictional show. In my high school I probably had say one or two friends taking the same cource as me while the other half of my croonies attended different studies in a different room. So if anything interesting happned in thier class room or ours they would have to tell us since there is no way we would instantly know about it (unless it was so huge that it spread out quickly)it makes them appear xenophobic of the other classmates around them or co-dependent on each other.
2. Violet was nice, and I loved how in one scene Jesse used her feminism for good instead of annoyance when she told off Violet's rich boyfriend(I can't remember his name but he scolded her for talking to Screech about some school project telling that it upset him when she talked to the other boys but Jesse caught on to that and said that she can look or talk to anyone that she wanted to; she wasn't his property) very rare scene from Jessie and I wished they kept going with that sort of heroism.
And to top it off, they should have kept with the whole Violet/Screech relationship. They were so much more happier than when he was pining for Lisa.
3. Note that I am not ragging on the background, I would understand the cost effectiveness of recycling one scene for different scenerious (that was common for alot of shows back then I think if you didn't have enough money to waste) so I am not raging on that. They did that back in the 50s and 60s with classic movies too you know.
3. The "Zack Attack" band sort of bothered me, how egocentric can you get naming a band after you? And realistically they should have had some scenes where the band protested this because its a group effort not just Zack alone...wasn't he the "manager" of the band anyway?
4. There is no way that the school would have runned properly by the actions of only six kids. A bit of a stretch I agree with all here, not a good place for a extra to exercise her creative talents on the show.
5. Tori was obviously a grunge/tough girl poser. Yeah we needed balance against Zack, but lets face it, the drunk driving episode really made her out to be a majoy phoney. For someone who looked as if they attended a few "Metallica" or "Nirvana" concerts in thier day she was totally OOC acting all freaked out that everyone was drinking at a typical teenage party. It would have made sense before she left that she tried it once or that she was trying to quit. But such was not the case and we lost all respect for a so-called "relatable" character.
6. The "Say No to Dope" episode really REALLY should have been revised better than that.

Ever since Dustin Diamond's inexplicable self-humiliation on Celebrity Fit Club, I can't watch this show. Thanks a lot, you super-creep.
Here's a fun drinking game: Every time you see Slater in a tank top or workout gear, take a shot of your favorite (adult) beverage. I guarantee by the end of the show you won't be able to stand.
The Jessie Spannau "I'm so excited" speed addiction was truly the funniest thing i've ever seen. i'm so jealous because my husband gets to watch reruns at the gym in the morning and has seen it like three times in the past year. please if anyone knows how to get a hold of just this episode, let me know. what a desperate episode and career, elizabeth berkeley. oh yeah, thanks for showgirls, too.
Does anyone else feel sorry for Dustin Diamond when he tried to break back into acting by being cast as that "Famous Actor" on that dating show a few years ago. How embarrassing!
Saved By The Bell is too easy to make fun of. It was incredibly cheesy, unrealistic (even by TV standards) and sometimes I wondered if the scripts were written by monkeys. That being said I watched every Saturday. It was never really a good show but it was entertaining (for the most part) and it was always on after school so I could escape reality for 30 minutes. The show JTS when they brought on Tori and Screech became even more of a baffoon than before. The characters were so inconsistent. One minute Screech is a total moron, the next he's made out to be the smartest kid in school, which is it? And what the hell happened to Max? I truly couldn't take Jesse, she was so anal I couldn't take it. What the hell did Slater ever see in her?
I always felt bad for Screech, his friends always treated him badly, used him and laughed at him yet they made it seem like Zach and the other dopes were his best friends who would always be there for him. It was seemed like Screech was always doing things for Zach and the gang, but they rarely did anything for him, to me that's not being a very good friend, or any kind of friend, but I digress...
Another thing that always irritated me was that Jesse seemed have a drug problem for one episode LOL. Remember when she was addicted to caffeine pill? "I'm so excited, I'm so excited, I'm so...scared" It so cheesy I couldn't help but laugh. Obviously it was attempt to scare kids off drugs but the way it was handled was so ridiculous, you couldn't help but laugh at it. I realize it's just a kid's show, but I'm sorry, even I knew back then that you don't have a drug problem one minute and then Zach and the gang show up at your house and everythings all great.
Anyways, good show, it was what it was,a cheesy but entertaining show. The college years were lame and new class was even worse. Once Kelly and Lisa left (and then suddenly came back for graduation...very strange, were they in the witness protection program??? where the hell did they go?) they should have just ended the show, it just got too painful to watch with that boring girl Tori.

Great show but had several dumb moments. The "No Hope With Dope" episode where Johnny Dakota comes in and tries to smoke pot with the kids and hit on kelly was stupid. Kelly was supposed to be how old in this? This was To catch a Predator Material. I was waiting for Chris Hanson to show up. Also they recycled this plot later(as they often did) in the college years episode where Johhny Walters, the big pro football star comes in. Same routine, The kids initially fawn over him, zack becomes his buddy and he tries to get with kelly. They discover he's a jerk and stand up for what they believe in. Originality was lacking in quite a few episodes.
